Air filter maintenance is most important on Geothermal Heatpumps !
Dirty Coils Waste Energy and Cost You Money

A dirty coil cannot supply proper heat transfer and results in greater energy consumption.
A dirty units cooling or heating capacity can be reduced by as much as 30 %.
Dirty coils increase operating pressure and temperatures.
The compressors lubricant will breakdown.
A failed compressor means no cooling or heating and costly repair.

Air Filters and Furnace Filters - Whether you call them air filters, furnace filters or AC filters, we're sure to have a filter to clean your home's air. We carry a full line of 3M Filtrete air filters, as well as our own line of Filters Fast brand air filters. In each line, you'll find a full range of sizes and filter medias (MERV 8, 11 & 13). Furnace filters should be changed frequently to ensure the air in your home is clean and free of particulates.                                       Dynamic home.

What type of air filter should you use ?

Pleated air filters or space 201 filters keep the finer particles from going into or thru the unit. The home air filter is usually located as close to the blower unit as possible, in the cold air return duct. Sometimes the home air filter will be in a large central return in a wall or ceiling. Remove the grill or box cover holding your filter in place. I recommend to check every three months, geothermal filter maintenance is very important. If you can hold the filter up to a light and not see through it, it is definitely time to change your home air filter. Check to see if the coil has collected anything that has gotten by the filter system An air filter is a collector of dust, dirt, grime and other microscopic things that float around a home. When a heating or cooling system is turned on, it collects these particles to protect the system and clean a home's air.It accumulates a thick layer of air borne particles as it circulates air throughout the home. As air filters get dirtier, they also become less effective at capturing the airborne germs and pollutants that can irritate your familys breathing. Stuffy noses, sneezing, allergies and even asthma are triggered. Your family inhales what your filter cant handle any longer.Once it has trapped a certain amount, it gradually restricts the air flow moving through the system. These problems require the system to work harder to keep a home cool or warm, wasting energy and increasing your monthly bill. An old and forgotten filter can accumulate so much dirt and grime that it can totally choke off the air flow to the system causing problems. The home air filter could even be sucked into the blower motor and cause damage to your system. Pleated filters or space 201 filters are the way to go, but I can not stess enough how important heatpump filter maintenance is!

The home air filter life depends on things such as:

1.) The number of people who live in your home
2.) If there are pets in the house
3.) If there is a smoker in the house
4.) If you leave the windows open
5.) If you have pollen bearing trees or plants in the neighborhood
6.) If you live in an area with a lot of dampness
7.) If you live in an area that is dry or arid
Plus many others and the type of home air filter you have installed.

If several of these factors sound familiar, youll likely experience a quicker loading of particles on your filters and will consequently have to change it more often. At an absolute minimum, you should change your filter every three months to avoid those geothermal filter problems. A clean air filter will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system, which could lead to expensive maintenance and utility bills. If you forget to change your air filter or just don't change it at all it may result in extensive damage to the fan blower motor or compressor. Dirt and grime accumulate on crucial moving parts causing them to fail much quicker than expected. This can be very costly and sometimes leads to a total system replacement. At the very least, your system life expectancy will be reduced significantly. The harder your system works, the more energy it will consume. The more energy it consumes, the higher the energy bills. A basic filter maintenance program can save you hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars a year. Install the new or cleaned air filter with the air flow arrow pointing toward the blower. If you experience higher dust levels in your home due to changes in outside air, construction or dry weather, you may need to change or wash your filter more frequently than the recommended time to avoid these kind of geothermal filter problems.

What does MERV mean?
Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, or MERV for short, is a home air filter rating system devised by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) to standardize and simplify filter efficiency ratings for the public. The higher the MERV rating, the higher the efficiency of the air filter. Simply stated, a MERV 12 will remove smaller particles from the air than a MERV 8. For the consumer this means that you now have the ability to effectively compare one filterd to another. In general, any MERV 8 or 11 will perform about the same as any other MERV 8 or 11, respectively. The MERV rating only applies to efficiency. Additions such as carbon, Lysol anti-bacterial treatment and Arm & Hammer baking soda are value-added benefits and are not an expression of the MERV rating system. If allergies or asthma are your concern, we suggest you choose a MERV 8 or higher.

Merv 1 to 4
Typically disposable type filters
Do not do a very good job
Will not stop particles smaller than 10 microns
With a 6% minimum efficiency at capturing the measured particles
pollen, sanding dust and larger dust particles

Merv 5 to 8
These filters are a better choice
These filters will collect particles as small as 3 microns
Merv 8 means the filter is 60% minimum efficient at capturing measured particles
mold spores, hair spray, fabric protector, dusting aids, cement dust and pet dander.

Merv 9 to 12
These filters are a great choice for home owners who want the best dust control possible.
Will stop particles in the 1 to 3 micron range.
Merv 11 means the filter is 80-85% minimum efficient at capturing measured particles
humidifier dust, lead dust, milled flour, auto emissions and other fumes.

With Merv 9 ratings and above it is important to clean or replace them when recommended
because they will effect air flow when they become dirty.
This can lead to performance problems and decreased operating efficiency.

Merv 13 to 16
Will stop particles as small as .3 microns.
These filters are used in hospitals and other super clean environments.
Merv 13 means the home air filter is 89-90% minimum efficient at capturing measured particles
bacteria, tobacco smoke, and particles that make you sneeze.

Most of What You Can't See Can Hurt You.
Most of the dangerous particles in the indoor air cannot be seen by the human eye.
What you can see comprises only about 10% of the polluntants present in the indoor air
with each visible particles measuring above 10 microns.
Particles particularly those that measure below 4 microns cause most of our health problems.
See the chart below for more detailed information about each MERV rating and the things those filters will trap. The table also shows the efficiency of trapping different sized particles.

My coil cleaning method:
I cut a hole in the return duct as big as possible so I have a clean shot at the coil (make cuts slanted toward the center).
I use a pump-type sprayer to apply foaming coil cleaner into the coils fins.
The foam is then rinsed with clean water in the pump sprayer and the process repeated.
Finally, the conesate pan is rinsed with clean water from a pump sprayer.
